Subrecipient Watch

Our mission

Make it easy for the people who hand out federal grants to keep up with the audits of those who receive them.

Why this matters

Federal grants often pass through a state, county, city, university or nonprofit on their way to the people they're meant to help. Whoever passes the money on is expected to follow up when an audit raises a problem. That follow-up protects public money, and the programs and communities that depend on it.

The audits are already public. What's scarce is time. Too much of this work means looking up one organization after another and keeping dates in a spreadsheet, usually on top of everything else a grants office has to do.

What we believe

  • Public data should be easy to use. It was collected for accountability, and it should serve that purpose without hours of lookups.
  • Show your work. Every result links back to the clearinghouse report, so you can check it yourself.
  • Say what we don't know. A missing audit isn't proof of a problem, and a late one may have an extension. We tell you what to ask instead of accusing anyone.
  • Help people decide, don't decide for them. The judgment stays with you. We handle the looking up and the remembering.
  • Your data is yours. We don't sell it, and we don't use it for anything except running the service for you.
